Stibbe is the first CO2 Neutral law firm in Belgium
Stibbe is the first carbon-neutral law firm in Belgium. The Brussels office was able to entirely offset its CO2 emissions by supporting a CO2logic climate project in India. Achieving the carbon-neutral status is a milestone in our ongoing environmental policy and demonstrates the firm’s aim to invest further in an environmentally responsible society.
So far, Stibbe’s green initiatives include encouraging the use of public transport (over 90% of our employees come to work by public transport), state of the art videoconferencing facilities as an alternative to long-distance travelling, efficient energy management of our office, ceramic coffee cups instead of paper ones. The commitment of the Brussels office to further reduce its carbon footprint involved calculating the remaining amount of CO2 emissions still produced by the firm and offsetting them to achieve net zero emissions. By doing so, the office realizes its goals of reducing and offsetting its climate impact while being an example for promoting environmental awareness.
Stibbe wants to take responsibility for its climate impact by supporting a certified climate project. Stibbe has chosen to back up a mini-hydro project in India which supports the local electricity grid that provides electricity from the irrigation canal water, a clean energy source, and makes it available in the rural feeder. The electricity generated would go a long way in meeting electricity demand and stabilizing frequent grid failures in the southern regional grid of India. Apart from generating a utility in the local region, the project also has positive socio-economic implications and is certified by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This type of ‘green’ project allows one to compensate for its CO2 emissions, i.e., for every tonne of CO2 produced, an equivalent amount of CO2 is saved by a verified emission reduction project somewhere else in the world. Like our clients, we believe it is important to take this step in addition to all other green initiatives. This is a long-term initiative that we will continue to take seriously.”
